Khó nhất là khả năng so sánh

The first layer is identification and provenance: batch code, time, raw material, sample source, and post-harvest processing information if available. The second layer is equipment and roasting conditions: machine, batch mass, time-based thermal data, gas conditions, and process events. The third layer is output: color, mass, moisture, or chemical indicators. The fourth layer is sensory data if within scope, including method, evaluator, and scoring conditions.

Metadata determines reusability

A dataset user needs to know how a number was generated. So metadata should describe unit, method, sensor position, sampling approach, software version, and data status. FAIR emphasizes persistent identifiers, rich metadata, provenance, and clear usage licenses. For roasting data, provenance also helps identify which machine a heat curve belongs to and whether it's comparable with data from another source.

The hardest part is comparability

Two datasets can both have a temperature column but still not be mergeable. Variety, growing region, processing, moisture, equipment, sampling approach, and sensory method can all differ. Without describing these variables, researchers can easily treat two data groups as equivalent when they aren't. So an open dataset should prioritize describing conditions rather than just publishing final numbers.

How open should it be

Not all data needs to be fully open. There can be commercial information, supplier identification, or sensitive technical data. A reasonable approach is classifying data fields by level of openness, restriction, or internal-only. Metadata should still be maintained even when the underlying data has restricted access. FAIR also allows for authentication and authorization mechanisms where data access needs controlling.

Versioning and reproducibility

A research dataset shouldn't be silently changed. Each version needs an identifier and a clear record of what data was added, edited, or removed. Analysis code and processing procedures should be stored alongside the corresponding data version. When a study is published, others need to know which version they're using. This matters especially when statistical models are built on top of the data.

Open data doesn't automatically create good research

Open data only creates value when quality, metadata, and provenance are sufficient for others to assess it. A very large dataset lacking variable definitions can be harder to use than a small, well-described one. For roasted coffee, the goal should be creating a data source that's linkable and verifiable, not maximizing the number of batches.

Designing identifiers and links

An open dataset needs stable identifiers for batch, sample, and measurement. One batch can create multiple samples; one sample can have multiple sensory or chemical measurements. If the identifier structure doesn't reflect this relationship, users can easily treat dependent observations as independent samples. Designing the data structure from the start is therefore just as important as choosing which variables to measure.

Reuse must come with conditions of use

Whoever publishes a dataset should state the license, usage limits, and conditions that need to be preserved when analyzing it. If a variable only has meaning within a specific measurement method, metadata must state this clearly. FAIR places provenance and usage information within its reusability requirements. For coffee data, clearly stating conditions is how you avoid a number being reused outside its valid context.
